about us

The Australian Alpaca Centre opened its doors in 1992 with a twofold charter:

– to educate the Australian public about this fibre, remarkable for its strength, warmth and  lightweight properties, and known by the Incas as “the fibre of the Gods”

- to provide a retail outlet for the quality garments and homewares made from Alpaca.

A wide range of garments from jumpers, vests, scarves, hats, shawls and yarns all made from Alpaca fibre with its silky soft, durable qualities can be found at the Australia Alpaca Centre. We have become famous for providing garments valued for their lustre, lightness, warmth and wearability.

Alpaca
At the Australian Alpaca Centre we are keen to show the discerning buyer that Alpaca knits go far beyond the homespun look and that our colours and styles are up with the latest fashions. We select and design a wide range of garments so that there is something for everyone.

Alpaca Living, next to the Australian Alpaca Centre in Berrima.  stocks products such as blankets, throws, toys, cushions and beautifully crafted pieces for your home.

The Australian Alpaca Centre has been linked to the Australian Alpaca breeding industry since its inception. The first commercial herd arrived in Australia in 1988, imported by Judy and Phillip Street for ‘Coolaroo’, their property near Berrima in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales. Judy’s daughter-in-law is a director of the Australian Alpaca Centre.

The families made an early decision to establish a vertically integrated industry involving superior genetic management, fibre processing, weaving and the production of garments.

The Centre serves as an educational outlet exhibiting high quality knitted and woven clothing, promotes the beauty of the Alpaca fibre in finished garments and provides an outlet for Alpaca products.

Judy Street’s daughter, Janie Hicks, now runs the breeding programme for Coolaroo Stud and spends lengthy periods in South America further refining bloodlines and breeding techniques. Using scientific and experience-based techniques “Coolaroo Stud” has achieved international acclaim for its promotion and breeding of Alpacas  The name ‘Coolaroo’ has been given to a yarn marketed by the Centre, acknowledging our connection to the property
